First used in China around 3,000 years ago, acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medicine. In recent years, it has become more popular in the West, and is used within Physiotherapy as a form of pain relief. Many patients report reduced pain and improved general well-being with acupuncture.

Acupuncture aims to reduce pain and inflammation by stimulating your body’s own healing chemicals (endorphins) to aid recovery. It can also be effective in the treatment of acute and chronic conditions.

Like traditional Chinese acupuncture, western acupuncture uses meridian points. However, Western acupuncture practitioners do not use a traditional Chinese mode of assessment and diagnosis. Instead, they apply Western scientific reasoning, which considers anatomy and neurophysiology to promote healing through stimulation of the nervous system at the local level, spinal cord and brain stem level.

Acupuncture can be used for various conditions, such as, back pain, sciatica, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and joint inflammation. Uniquely, physiotherapists can combine acupuncture with other treatment methods such as exercises, manipulation and stretching, which enhances healing and assists your rehabilitation.
